Building ICT Capacities @ the Grassroots

In the course of setting up the NASSCOM Knowledge Network, NF realized the need for an ongoing training programme to help knowledge centre coordinators understand the role of ICT in development, understand information needs of a community, identify relevant information and information sources, learn to disseminate relevant information in communities, and set-up and manage knowledge centres.

Therefore NF has invested energies in building capacities of partner organizations by extensive training of personnel managing knowledge centres under the ‘Building ICT Capacities @ Grassroots’ (BiG) programme.

About BiG

The aim of the BiG programme is to build capacities of small and medium sized civil society organizations across the country to use ICT as a part of their programme activities. This would mean support to set-up knowledge centres, manage existing centres to make them sustainable and in general use ICT tools for social development projects

The main thrust areas:
  • Create a cadre of master trainers across the country.
  • Equip master trainers, potential and existing knowledge centre coordinators with requisite knowledge and skills related to basic IT, entrepreneurship, marketing, communication and content / services, which help them to set up and run knowledge centres.
  • Provide a platform to partner organizations to connect with and leverage on the strengths of others in the network / alliance working in related fields.
In 2006, NF organized several state level, regional and national workshops and consultations where training was imparted to grassroots practitioners and civil society leaders. In 2007, NF has continued the effort with support from organizations such as telecentre.org (under their Training Commons effort) and Intel.

Under the BiG programme, with support from Intel, NF has completed three sustainability and entrepreneurship workshop with part NGO leaders and NKN telecentre managers. These are -
