Project Name: PROJECT JYOTI
The Innovation
Some of the innovations introduced via this project which have resulted in the social upliftment of the community include:
- Community Technology Learning Centre (CTLC): A centre where people of all ages and abilities can come to learn about computers, use the internet, explore new careers, further their education and awareness, participate in community activities or develop technology skills.
- Another innovative approach adopted via this Project is disseminating information to the rural communities on their rights and government schemes for the poor. CTLCs have been used as Information centres to help communities fight for their rights through dissemination of information on various schemes, laws and policies of government.
- The project also entails customizing the program to meet the local needs of the communities. In rural India, it focuses on creating a knowledge base that is required for that population. For instance, sea coast communities are keener to know about sea weather to plan fishing trips, similarly agricultural communities are more interested to use the center to find out about commodity pricing etc. and so this program ensures that customization is taken into consideration when communities’ needs are addressed.
The Impact
The success of the programme is measured with the number of people trained and placed in jobs. Though difficult to measure, the programme has also facilitated a significant number of trainees for enhanced livelihood opportunities and alternate ways of income generation. Following is a quick look at some of the achievements:

The Innovation
The Daily Monitoring System is a unique innovative system devised for data collection directly from actual implementation level on real time basis and for monitoring programme implementation on the basis of exception reports. For Mid Day Meal Scheme in U.P. the System tracks the number of schools that served mid day meal on any particular day. It also tracks the number of children who have had lunch in the school on the prescribed working days.
The Impact
The innovation has resulted in checking fudging of data and enhance efficiency and efficacy of implementation of the Mid day Meal Scheme in the State. The daily MIS helps the District and State level authorities in zeroing-in on defaulting schools and take necessary remedial steps. As a result the number of schools where meal was not served is coming down.
The Innovation has brought in a system of accountability and transparency, primarily because data is available almost immediately. The System is a kind of mirror for the decision-maker in so far as it projects a picture in front of them which was just not available to them otherwise.

Website: http://www.cgnet.in/
Project Name: CGNet Swara
The Innovation
CGNet Swara is a voice portal, accessible by phone (IVR) and web (blog). Users can record their own messages or listen to messages left by others. Messages are verified and moderated by trained journalists to maintain credibility. Released messages are broadcast using social media, mailing lists and by phone to a vibrant community consisting of grassroots workers, concerned citizens, members of the administration and also mainstream media for action and follow up.
The Impact
In about 1.5 years of operation the pilot in Chhattisgarh, India has had excellent user tractions. Communities now have a way to share and discuss issues that are relevant to them, in their own language, consistent with oral traditions prevalent in many indigenous societies.
Specific impact has been seen in the area of governance, healthcare and education in addition to the basic theme of free speech and information exchange, where people have reported an issue from the grassroots and it has been picked up by urban development workers and/or the administration and resolved quickly.
For example, several workers have received long-pending NREGA payments after reporting their grievance on Swara. An anganwadi that had not received rations for months received them in 24 hours after calling Swara, as a result of a listener in Mumbai calling the concerned minister. Most recently, a bank in Chhattisgarh that had been denying withdrawals to tribals based on loans taken by their ancestors opened two special counters for the purpose after a report on Swara.
Shivank Agarwal & Team
Project Name: Online Video Subtitling Service
The Innovation
We have developed a software product which when integrated with the Internet browsers like Mozilla Firefox, Google Chrome and Internet Explorer adds subtitles automatically to the online videos currently being viewed. We are maintaining the database of the subtitle files in the BufferInfinite server. Thus our software identifies the online YouTube video currently being viewed, requests our server for the subtitle file corresponding to that video and dynamically embeds the subtitle to the video itself.
The Impact
- The project ensures that the pool of online videos with foreign content becomes more accessible to the Indian masses.
- In the years to come, the project will be a great boon for providing sophisticated reading practice to the Indians, especially the ones in rural areas, by extending the same language subtitling of Bollywood songs as proposed by Shri Brijkothari, PlanetRead to the online world.
- We shall be helping Government of India carry out its ambitious plan of educating rural India. It is to be noted that Government’s plan to expand broadband to the rural areas with speed as high as 512 kBps and support for YouTube videos in Aakash tablet are well in line with our project.
Sapna Shahani **
Website: http://www.waveindia.org/
Project Name: Wave India
The Innovation
Wave has been innovative in designing an online community media model to bring together young women from across India onto one platform. This common platform enables the collective to speak with one voice and advocate positive social change. Wave has also gained attention for its use of new technologies like videoblogging to encourage women to voice their views online in a visual way. International organisations such as the MacArthur Foundation and Stockholm Challenge also recognized the innovation of using new technologies to enhance learning. Within the core team, we feel that our model of mentoring and producing videos from a distance was innovative. For example, we would have a girl from Assam upload video clips that we would send to an editor in Bombay with central coordination from Goa.
The Impact
Since I have described the general impact on stakeholders in the powerpoint presentation, I will use this space to relate specific examples:
- Nineteen-year-old Rama Barhat from Udaipur won $3000 from the Women’s Voices Now Film Festival based in New York for her short video about a female rickshaw driver.
- Vandana K from Kangra district in Himachal Pradesh who was working with an NGO called Jaagori won a full scholarship to Prague Film School and Wave helped her raise some additional funds for living expenses.
- Moushumi Basu from Jharkhand has been commissioned $5000 by a prestigious international organization to create a short documentary about traditional environment conservation beliefs in the Sundarbans.
- Emarine Kharbhih from Meghalaya got an internship with a French TV channel based in Delhi.
- Lebul Nisa won a Laadli award for gender sensitivity in the media from UNFPA/ Population First, for her video about ‘half-widows’ in Kashmir.
- Leeza Khushboo, a disabled girl from Bihar, has been cited as an inspiration by several newspapers in Patna because she was selected to participate in the Wave Project. She now trains children in filmmaking using Wave’s training materials.

Project Name: Web@ssist
The innovation
Web@ssist is a pioneering assistive technology toolbar that is aimed to increase the accessibility of websites. It customises the way the disabled view and interact with the web pages, as the cloud itself can now adapt to its users. People with visual, dexterity, motor impairments, aged or situationally disabled, can use Web@ssist to browse the web by setting their personal accessibility preferences on the cloud. This comes through the capability of Web@ssist to modify the already built web pages having poor accessibility, but still making them accessible on the user side without installing any additional desktop software. The advanced framework can also be used to deploy any kind of web based AT tool and its integration in the accessibility preferences.
The impact
Web@ssist has opened up an unprecedented access to opportunities for the people with disabilities by giving them the independence to use the web at their ease. The websites now reform themselves according to their user’s special requirements with facilities like accessibility auto-repairments, alternative input mechanisms, typical AT tools etc. Web@ssist has removed the specific machine dependence for a disabled person, allowing an individual to use the web at any public place like libraries, labs, classrooms etc. with the same private settings anywhere. Amidst this, the long pursuit for a universal web accessibility solution has been resolved, since the solution can be used irrespective of any environment/platform/website constraints, and still offering tremendous scalability of adding more components to users requirements.

Project Name: Celebrating Those Who Care: A Radio Programme by HIV Positive Journalists
The innovation
TCH developed a 13-part radio series to highlight the stories of people living with HIV and a significant person in their life who supports them so that audiences can model their behavior on those who care. Partnering with the Network in Maharashtra by People Living with HIV (NMP+), TCH selected people living with HIV to work as radio journalists. These journalists were trained on the use of digital recording devices and interviewing techniques. They captured stories from the field that were woven into a serial that also included critical information on HIV and AIDS.
The Impact
People living with HIV who were trained to be radio journalists learned technical skills, for example use of computers and digital recorders. They also acquired skills in interviewing and anchoring for radio.
PLHIV who participated in the programme articulated how the process was in many ways transformational for them, in that they were able to deal with the issue of self-stigma. As their efforts got underway, they slowly redeemed their own faith and began to believe that ‘for every one person who stigmatizes, there is someone who cares.’
The pretest of the episodes revealed that the real-life testimonials of people who cared- whether they were family members, health care providers, employers, teachers, panchayat members, etc- proved to be inspiring stories for the listeners of the radio programme, who responded by believing that ‘if s/he can do it, maybe so can I’.
