Job Fair For People With Disabilities

An estimated 386 million of the world's working-age people have some kind of disability, says the International Labor Organization (ILO). Of the some 70 million persons with disabilities in India, only about 100,000 have succeeded in obtaining employment in industry. Though a dogmatic society and a general lack of understanding towards the issue of disability employment plays a major role, India, is witnessing a sea change in the Corporate Sector’s attitude towards persons with disabilities. One of the key factors instrumental in bringing about this change is the role that Corporate Social Responsibility plays; by changing from a philanthropic approach to a complete business module, CSR has focused on disability as an area which delves into the talent pool of skilled disabled professionals. India’s recent growth performance has been spectacular; the country remains one of the fastest growing economies in the world. To move to the next level of growth the aim is to have "Inclusive development".

India has committed itself to realizing the Millennium Development Goals (MDG) for Persons with Disabilities through the implementation of the World Programme of Action concerning Disabled Persons and the Convention on Rights of Persons with Disabilities.

As a step towards Inclusivity, NASSCOM Foundation in association with Sarthak, a training institute for people with disabilities in Delhi, is organizing a first ever JOB FAIR for Persons With Disability (PwD) in the IT industry in Delhi. Leading IT/BPO companies will be present at the Job Fair and we expect a large number of PwDs to be placed in these reputed companies.

The job fair is being seen as an assessment of the attitude and progress of the IT sector in recognizing the talents and skills of the disabled sector. A first attempt by NASSCOM Foundation, the fair will explore the issues which concern HR when employing people with disabilities and open up the path for more awareness and dialogues between the IT industry’s inclusive policies and the need to retrofit them to promote inclusion.

As a part of its Accessibility Initiative, NASSCOM Foundation proposes to organize similar fairs in the regional hubs, thus promoting Inclusion and taking forward the issue of employment as one of its main agenda for the coming year.
