To harness the power of Web 2.0 for NASSCOM CSR practitioners and Non Profits, NASSCOM Foundation organized a workshop in Mumbai on 12th and the 13th February 2010, with one of the most respected technology consultants worldwide – Beth Kanter. Strategic use of social media is actually helping them to measurably reach new people and bringing added value to mission-driven work. Social media is propelling nonprofit goals to build a movement around a core advocacy issue, improve customer service or programs, reach new donors, or spread awareness of a nonprofit brand around the world. This workshop addressed how to think strategically about social media for external communications so your organization could maximize its time and resources. Participants learnt how to create a social media strategy map that integrates with their overall communications plan and Internet strategy as well as address organizational culture issues that often arise when a new technology is introduced. It also provided an opportunity to learn how to select tools and explore best practices. Participants worked in small groups and played the Nonprofits and Social Media Game, a simulation game using a special deck of cards where participants work in small groups to develop a strategy, identify adoption challenges, measurement, and benefits to integrating social media tools and strategies in a nonprofit organizational or network context. Each group shared their learnings and challenges they discovered. Beth Kanter also provided an opportunity for peer consulting on tips, resources, and getting started with social media.
